If you regularly cycle, whether on your daily commute or for fun, you need to be prepared for the colder and wetter conditions that winter brings, so making sure you’ve got all the right gear is a good place to start.
When it comes to bike accessories in the UK, there are so many for cyclists to choose from it can be hard to always know what’s essential and what’s just a gimmick. One thing you shouldn’t neglect is your bike lights, to ensure you’re visible to other road users in the dark mornings and evenings, or in times of heavy rain.
Cycling Weekly recently cited figures published by the Department for Transport, which showed that the majority of cyclists were injured between 7-9am and 3-7pm on a weekday. It’s clear to see the importance of being seen on the roads in the darker months.
Bike Radar recently highlighted some of the top clothing accessories for cyclists this winter. Top of the list is a winter jacket, with the publication noting that you’ll need to choose whether you want a waterproof shell to keep you dry in the heaviest downpours, or a soft-shell jacket which, while not totally waterproof, will be warmer and generally breathable.
Another essential, according to the publication, is a cycling hat. Here too there are a few options, from thin skull caps that will keep you a little warmer to full hats with ear flaps that fit under your helmet.
Winter gloves are another area where you shouldn’t skimp, as keeping your hands warm and functioning is vital for safe cycling. One tip is to choose gloves with long cuffs so that you can tuck them into the sleeves of your coat.
