Teenagers Planning ‘Everesting’ Cycling Challenge
Two teenagers from Sussex are planning an Everesting attempt to raise money for the Nepal Youth Foundation.
Lukas Nerurkar, 13, and Tom Pughe-Morgan, 14, intend to cycle up and down Ditchling Beacon, a hill in the South Downs, until they have cycled the equivalent height of Everest, which is 8,848m.
The pair told road.cc that they were looking for a “gnarly cycling challenge”. Tom revealed that the two of them will have to make 60 ascents of the hill to bring them to the height of Mount Everest.
“Although we are both fit young cyclists, it is going to be a significant challenge,” he stated. Tom also told the website that they’ve done a practice run of 25 ascents, commenting that a further 35 climbs “is really going to test us”.
They will be getting in the saddle on 30 August for their Everesting cycle and are hoping to raise £500 for the charity, which they chose because it will help teenagers in the country where Everest is found.
If you’re thinking of trying anything similar – or even just getting out on some hilly rides in the UK’s countryside – you need to make sure you have the right kind of bike. For off-road terrain, you’ll be looking for mountain bikes online that can cope with the kind of cycling you’ll be doing.
According to BikeRadar, if you’re new to mountain biking you also need to factor in the expense of additional equipment, like gloves and suitable clothing, when setting the budget for your new bike.
You also need to think about where you’ll predominantly be riding when deciding on the type of suspension you get and the material your bike frame is made out of.
