Sort Out Your High Vis This Autumn
If you have got the best BMX bikes the West Midlands has to offer, then you may have been frustrated of late.
With the nights drawing in you may have found that you are less able to get out on your bike than you have wanted to recently.
It is always important to wear high visibility clothing when you are cycling, but it is particularly important when you are cycling in the dark. As the days are getting shorter maybe now is the time to get hold of some high vis clothing for your rides?
The advice to wear high vis clothing while riding has become more prominent recently as Horse and Hound reported that RAF Wittering is handing out high visibility clothing to horse riders in an effort to increase their safety while they host the chinook force there.
Group captain Tony Keeling, RAF Wittering’s station commander said: “For many, Chinooks will be an unfamiliar noise in our skies. We want to make sure that our nearby equestrian communities feel informed and have an opportunity to get the equipment they need before flying commences in order to maximise their safety.”
Ministry of Defence research has shown that helicopter pilots can see horse riders wearing high visibility clothing up to half a mile sooner than they can see riders without it.
While bike riders are a different breed to horse riders the message is still the same: wear higher visibility clothing to keep you safer.
