4 In 5 People Want ‘More Protected Bike Routes’ On Roads
As much fun as cycling is and as good for your health as it is, if you do a lot of road biking you’ll no doubt already know that you’re often taking your life into your hands when navigating your way through all the traffic.
Bike Life, an assessment report of cycling in cities, has just revealed that four in five people (78 per cent) are keen to see more protected bike routes on our roads to help make cycling safer, even if it means less space for other traffic on the road.
At the moment, just 19 miles of cycle routes on the road have been physically separated from pedestrians and vehicles in six out of the seven cities included in the study.
And 64 per cent of people admit they would bike more if these on-road cycle routes were separated in this fashion. Just 30 per cent say that cycling safety in their cities is good… so it seems there certainly is room for improvement.
“More people using bikes instead of cars would address so many of the problems our urban centres face – health, congestion, air quality, social inclusion…you name it, more cycling will have a positive impact on it,” British Cycling Policy adviser Chris Boardman commented.
Back in September, the Department for Transport announced that an urgent review of cycle safety would be carried out after a number of high profile accidents involving cyclists. It will look at whether a new offence equivalent to causing death by careless or dangerous driving should be brought in for cyclists, as well as seeing how safety can be further improved between cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.
